The 3 Keys To Growing Your Blog
I think every blogger, at one point or another in their blogging career, feels like growing their audience is a super overwhelming and daunting task. I get emails and questions all the time asking how I've built my blog up over the past year and a half, and after much thought I've narrowed it down to these three components.
A Killer Design
The design of your site is the first impression anyone will have of your blog. Make sure it's a good one. You want your design to embody the style and ethos of your blog, while still being organized and user-friendly. Too many widgets and it will be hard for readers to focus on your content. Too empty of a design, and they might not have enough of a connection to warrant them coming back a second time. It's all about finding that perfect middle ground and setting your blog up so it is the perfect representation of your brand.
High Quality Content
I've already spoken several times about the importance of awesome content, but I have to say that I honestly feel my blog would not be what it is today without putting in the hard work to create worthwhile posts. If you don't know, I used to write a blog called Miss Indie a few years ago, and it was like 90% fluff and filler posts. No surprise - it felt like my audience was growing at a snail's pace. Truth is, most people only have a limited amount of their day to read blogs, and they're not going to waste time on content that doesn't really grab their attention. Readers want content that is going to help them with something they're struggling with or help improve their lives somehow.
Commenting On Other Blogs
Once you've got a gorgeous blog and fantastic content, how do you get people to see it? I think this is the most asked question I get, and I've found that the answer is pretty simple - comment on other blogs. It's that simple. Allot an hour or two a day, and visit different blogs. Check out their content, leave a thoughtful comment or two, and at the end of the comment leave a non-obtrusive link back to your blog. None of this "follow 4 follow" business, but if you're leaving genuine comments, most bloggers are totally cool with you leaving your blog URL. Every time I do this, I always see an increase in my traffic as well as new subscribers. Not sure how to find new blogs to check out? Visit your favorite blogs, and see if they have a daily reads section. Then visit some of those blogs, and do that process all over again. I've found some really cool blogs this way, and it takes no time at all.
