Highlighters For Magical Girls
Growing up, I watched a lot of cartoons and anime. While the boys were enthralled with all of their superhero shows, I was completely obsessed with watching every episode of Sailor Moon. She was my adolescent hero, and I loved getting to watch a kickass group of girls save the planet each week. One of my favorite things about the show was all of the cute little compacts and tools Sailor Moon had in her arsenal. The recent wave of holographic highlighters have really reminded me of all of those pretty gadgets, and inspired my current collection of "magical girl" highlighters.
The most Sailor Moon-esque highlighter in my collection is definitely the Too Faced Love Light Prismatic Highlighter in Ray Of Light. When I saw pictures of these highlighters for their release, I knew I had to get my hands on at least one. I went with the pinky champagne shade, but I'm definitely going to be adding the white silver color soon. These highlighters add a gorgeous sheen to the skin, and can be built up to look quite blinding. A more affordable option that still gives plenty of bang for it's buck is Colourpop's Super Shock Highlighter in Spoon. This is also a beautiful champagne-pink shade that gives you a great dewy glow (this shade has been discontinued, but I have seen reviews that Flexitarian might be even better than Spoon).
When I'm really wanting to feel like a magical cartoon character, I love reaching for a duo chrome highlighter in a crazy shade. These are a great way to play around with some fun colors without it being too bold - even on bare faced days, I like to add a little pop of lavender or mint highlighter to my cheekbones, just to give the illusion that I have unicorn skin. My current drugstore option is Hard Candy's Iridescent Pearl Highlighter*. This one can be a little powdery and definitely has tons of glitter, but I think it looks so cool if you're headed to a party or out dancing with friends. It looks white in the pan, but on your skin it shifts from lavender to green when it's in the light. For something that still provides that iridescent glow without the glitter, I highly recommend the Opalescent Highlighting Palette* from Lime Crime. This palette contains three gorgeous shades - Pink, Gold, and Peach - that shift in the light to various pastel shades like orange, mint, and lavender. You also get a lot of product in each pan, and the palette overall gives plenty of options to work with.
When I want that really dewy, "wet-but-not-wet" look, there's only one thing I reach for - Glossier's Haloscope Highlighter in Quartz. This is my secret weapon for achieving skin that looks glazed and glowing. It just melts into my skin, giving it an almost wet-looking sheen that stays blinding all day. The cool thing with this highlighter is that it offers more shine than color, so it can be applied with any look. It's also super hydrating, which I love, and blends into the skin beautifully. If you've been wanting to try this (or anything) from Glossier, click here to use my rep code to get 20% off your first purchase!
